Clients ask me about two things and while I always Clients ask me about two things and while I always get a giggle out of it, today I’m responding. Check out my #deskcape.

Q. what does your office look like off camera? Hey I’m a serious Virgo but not obsessed with tidy. I do need things at my fingertips when I go looking for them though. So I leave things out!

All my Zoom calls show me in front of a wall of books. My happy place. Yes they are filed nearly alphabetically and my feature items are there too, like Frankenstein stuff, wolves, and Celtic art.

This is what’s beside my notebook today. Also answering the second question:

what are you favourite thing things for writing (etc.).

✏️: always @blackwing
📚: Vintage Classics editions by PRH UK are a fave right now. This one is Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland
Bookseller: @nottawacottagebookstore (go local, go small for books)
🕯️: Diptique Pomander a gift from the wonderful @mandylehto
🗒️: Post-It notes in the ocean colours when available
Jewellery: @amandabrittin is my absolute favourite (give her a follow and be quick when she posts a new piece! )

Share your faves? Links and names welcome.

it's that brick wall feeling.
You want to write this. You really want to yank that line you hear in your head out of the murkiness of your memory, but pull and tug as you do, nothing.
Your fingers are poised over the keyboard, pen over the page.

You're up out of your chair in a flash, doing something else.

While you're emptying the dishwasher you're telling yourself all the reasons this is a bad idea, how useless you are, and questioning why you told anyone you were writing a book.

You might even give this up, you think.

Just read a few posts on my Foundation Master Class page...you'll see how normal all of this is, feel less alone and even find a way to laugh at yourself and this crazy writing life.

Still. Noiseless. Scented. Safe. I wish for tho Still.
Noiseless.
Scented.
Safe.

I wish for those simple yet scarce things on this partial day off.

I never get to read for pure pleasure, although it is always enjoyable to read for my work. Today I’m spending time #behindthebook with Tolkien, in this newly released The Tower and the Ruin by Michael D. C. Drout.

What are you reading?

What are your reading essentials?

I’ve got #teavana citrus mint. 🫖🫖🫖
My favourite handmade Afghan. 🧶🧶🧶
A candle, 🕯️🕯️🕯️
sleeping animals, 🦮🦮🦮🐈🐈🐈
and for once…
nowhere to be. 🗓️🗓️🗓️

Watch for my posts on Substack about the cool lesser-known stories about JRR Tolkien. Links in bio, as always.

The view isn’t spectacular. But I know Lake Huro The view isn’t spectacular. But I know Lake Huron is a hundred feet away.

The snow is beautiful. Clean, sparkly, what the earth needs in spring.

Being snowed in is a burden until you release attachment to being somewhere else, getting that list done before lunch.

To sit still is one of the greatest challenges in the life of a writer, a creative, a person with a long memory for being told getting sh#t done was the measure of a person.

When I sit, even if I am patting my dog @cooperscanadianlife, reading a client manuscript and watching a pot in the stove… all at the same time… I congratulate myself for the stillness I have allowed myself. I am a work in progress but I’m getting there .

This is what’s showing up in my writing coaching This is what’s showing up in my writing coaching practice today.

As some of you know, I hold office hours and open writing sessions called Writers Room weekly for people in my community (the #bookfam). I witness the shift in energy as writers repress stories that are fighting for air. I see once forgotten tales come out of the closet. Many of us, especially those who are sensitive, empathic, creative or in a time of contemplation will have more to carry now than other times of the year.

A lot of folks are struggling to find words for what they’re facing—not just we writers who expect the flow when the tap is turned on.

When the weather turns
When calendars point toward the end of the year
When attention turns to the festive and bright

People are still walking their stories, and they can feel heavier than ever.

Let’s check in on each other… especially now when it’s easier to believe someone is busy than they are burdened.

This is what we are here for…to carry stories with one another.

I won’t give away all the details here. On Sub I won’t give away all the details here.

On Substack I’m telling the Behind the Book story as I remember @clairecameron123 telling it a book event.

Here are the cryptic details.

🤔Claire is healing.

🤔She leafs through the pages of her novel The Bear.

🤔Her eye and soon curiosity land on something she hadn’t thought of quite like that before.

🤔An oar is more substantial than a paddle.

🤔What if there is another way to look at the Algonquin Park events describes in The Bear?

🤔What if she examined some other experiences up close while she dug deeper?

🤔What if this became her next book, and healed her in more ways than she could have anticipated?

Thank you for following your curiosity for us @clairecameron123

At some point we can’t allow ourselves the luxur At some point we can’t allow ourselves the luxury of NOT writing. Excuses. Resistance. Other priorities. Client work. Family obligations. Errands. Charity. I’ve used them all. You likely have too.

I am a writer by choice, passion, and profession. The noise of it—the tap—is on all the time for me.

Do you feel that?

When I’m not hearing the words talk to me I relocate. It’s something I learned in dog training. Move the situation just a little and try the word-action sequence again. I grab my go-bag without taking a moment to consider. More than ten minutes drive and I’ll reconsider. Cold space and no real food and I’ll pass. Excuses even with this.

#writeeverywhere is how I live, no just how I create. I draft scenes on rocks by Georgian Bay. I wrote the early chapters of my memoir on street cafe in Collingwood. I embellish client manuscripts at local coffee spots like this gem in Stayner, Ontario.

The holiday decor felt especially warm and noncommercial to me as I completed a major project yesterday. Scenes from my spot at the end of the big communal table.

Are you in rural-ish Ontario?
Writing from a small town somewhere that you cherish? Care to share? Please do.

Drop a note about where you go—your place or your view when you write.

What were you doing when you were 18? Not penning What were you doing when you were 18? Not penning a classic while enduring shame, loss, grief, alienation and rejection.

Mary Shelley wrote what she knew in Frankenstein. I believe that there is alot more of her in the Creature than we compassionately consider.

Writing about that on Substack today.

my Linktr.ee has it all. Link in bio.
