"Is it really this hard?"

Yup… Let me tell you what I say to every writer who sits with this doubt:

Yes. It is this hard. And that makes you gloriously, perfectly normal.

Here's what we don't talk about enough: We're attempting to create a world designed for consumption, to focus deeply in an age of endless distraction, and to drill down to singular moments when our minds are trained to scroll, skim, and skip.

Writers often ask me how to make their scenes unforgettable.

They pile on adjectives and descriptions, hoping somehow the perfect combination of words will create magic. But here's what I've learned after years of helping writers transform their work: The power isn't in adding more—it's in strategic distillation.

Think of yourself as an alchemist. Your job isn't to dump every detail onto the page; it's to select and refine until you've crafted something precious carefully, something readers can't help but collect and carry with them.

I created the DISTILL method because I watched writers struggle to know what to keep and let go. We're often too close to our experiences to see what matters most.

"Is this any good?"

The question echoes through every writer's room, gets whispered in the dark hours between drafts, and muttered over coffee-stained pages.

But pause with me for a moment. What are we asking when we question our work's quality? Are we wondering about it’s worth? And if so, how the heck is that even measured? Are we seeking validation from the marketplace or permission from our hesitant hearts to continue?

"Good" is a mirror that reflects our deepest aspirations to us. For some, it's the quiet gasp of recognition from a reader who sees the truth in your words. For others, it's the satisfaction of a story finally told whole and true.

The world will offer its metrics—bestseller lists, sales rankings, awards—shiny markers of success that can be manufactured, marketed, and bought.

But the measure that matters most is the one that keeps your pen moving across the page when doubt settles in like morning fog. It's the standard that whispers "keep going" when the easier path would be to stop.

Before you question your work's worth, ask your definition of worth itself. What flame are you trying to tend? What truth are you serving?Set your compass by your true north. Write to that.

What's the quiet voice of "good enough" whispering to you? Write what’s coming through and of course it will feel good. Is feeling good, good enough for you?

I have a few core beliefs about impactful non-fict

I have a few core beliefs about impactful non-fiction.

First, books that serve do so when writers intentionally lead the reader to an epiphany they will never be able to unsee once it is discovered.

Next, scenes are the core building blocks of great nonfiction, especially memoir.

Third, is that memoir-esque content must be in every nonfiction book, somewhere, somehow. Once understood by masterminders…the doubts rise, and the questions are always something like:

“How the heck do I know when my scenes are having an impact.”

“When they are unforgettable,” I answer.

Everything I learned to do in order to grow, persi

Everything I learned to do in order to grow, persist, and withstand what life throws at me has become the greatest source of meaning in my life.

And that is what I’m called to write about. My why, the making of me, the meaning I made of the wonderful experiences, and some of the challenging ones, too…those are my books now.

What do you need to write about? What are you waiting for?

As a child, I was taught to be quiet, to blend in, and not to make waves. This lesson stayed with me for many years, stifling my own voice and suppressing my individuality.

But over time, I realized the importance of self-expression. I discovered the power of my voice, the ability to connect with others, to share my experiences, and to make a difference.

Today, I'm passionate about helping others find their own voice. I coach people on the art of storytelling, the importance of self-expression, and the transformative power of sharing their experiences.

It's a beautiful irony that the very thing I was taught to suppress has become the most meaningful aspect of my life. It's a testament to the power of self-discovery, breaking free from societal expectations, and embracing our true selves.

you're setting up your new planner (paper or digital), standing in front of a white board, making lists, searching the cost of trips, talking to your partner about how you want next year to look.

You've heard of word of the year, right? It's about you choosing a word that jumps out at you, means something you really believe in and want more of in your life next year. It's a word or wantra (my word for word-mantra) that you keep front of mind as a guide and instant reframe for the year to come.

Some people set goals with their word, others use it for companionship, still others make it their cheerleading rant. I put mine in my email footer so I can't forget about it (like I did last year when I chose fierce, and I clearly was not fierce in 2024.)
