Patti - Author and Writing Coach
This is what’s showing up in my writing coaching This is what’s showing up in my writing coaching practice today.

As some of you know, I hold office hours and open writing sessions called Writers Room weekly for people in my community (the #bookfam). I witness the shift in energy as writers repress stories that are fighting for air. I see once forgotten tales come out of the closet. Many of us, especially those who are sensitive, empathic, creative or in a time of contemplation will have more to carry now than other times of the year.

A lot of folks are struggling to find words for what they’re facing—not just we writers who expect the flow when the tap is turned on.

When the weather turns
When calendars point toward the end of the year
When attention turns to the festive and bright

People are still walking their stories, and they can feel heavier than ever.

Let’s check in on each other… especially now when it’s easier to believe someone is busy than they are burdened.

This is what we are here for…to carry stories with one another.

I won’t give away all the details here. On Sub I won’t give away all the details here.

On Substack I’m telling the Behind the Book story as I remember @clairecameron123 telling it a book event.

Here are the cryptic details.

🤔Claire is healing.

🤔She leafs through the pages of her novel The Bear.

🤔Her eye and soon curiosity land on something she hadn’t thought of quite like that before.

🤔An oar is more substantial than a paddle.

🤔What if there is another way to look at the Algonquin Park events describes in The Bear?

🤔What if she examined some other experiences up close while she dug deeper?

🤔What if this became her next book, and healed her in more ways than she could have anticipated?

Thank you for following your curiosity for us @clairecameron123

At some point we can’t allow ourselves the luxur At some point we can’t allow ourselves the luxury of NOT writing. Excuses. Resistance. Other priorities. Client work. Family obligations. Errands. Charity. I’ve used them all. You likely have too.

I am a writer by choice, passion, and profession. The noise of it—the tap—is on all the time for me.

Do you feel that?

When I’m not hearing the words talk to me I relocate. It’s something I learned in dog training. Move the situation just a little and try the word-action sequence again. I grab my go-bag without taking a moment to consider. More than ten minutes drive and I’ll reconsider. Cold space and no real food and I’ll pass. Excuses even with this.

#writeeverywhere is how I live, no just how I create. I draft scenes on rocks by Georgian Bay. I wrote the early chapters of my memoir on street cafe in Collingwood. I embellish client manuscripts at local coffee spots like this gem in Stayner, Ontario.

The holiday decor felt especially warm and noncommercial to me as I completed a major project yesterday. Scenes from my spot at the end of the big communal table.

Are you in rural-ish Ontario?
Writing from a small town somewhere that you cherish? Care to share? Please do.

Drop a note about where you go—your place or your view when you write.

What were you doing when you were 18? Not penning What were you doing when you were 18? Not penning a classic while enduring shame, loss, grief, alienation and rejection.

Mary Shelley wrote what she knew in Frankenstein. I believe that there is alot more of her in the Creature than we compassionately consider.

Writing about that on Substack today.

my Linktr.ee has it all. Link in bio.
My #bookstack reveals the story of my life. I do My #bookstack reveals the story of my life.

I don’t mean figuratively. I’m not being metaphorical…Mary Shelley’s journal and Frankenstein have been mirrors for me since I was a teenager.

I’m writing about how I believe that Mary Shelley’s lived experiences, her loss, grief, rejection, alienation, and dependence mirrored the Creature’s and my own.

Guillermo Del Toro has said beautifully and publicly that his adaptation of the novel is the work of his life and also, its story in many ways.

What book was it for you? What did you read or are you reading now that makes you feel known, seen, or validated?

What’s the book of your life?

As a Frankenstein fan back some 40 years, I waited As a Frankenstein fan back some 40 years, I waited to comment on the movie.

There was too much to say.

But I wanted to applaud the art, and note how pleasing it was for me to see the Creature be closer to how this reader visualized him from Mary Shelley’s words.

Want to hear what else I have to say about the film
AND catch a glimpse of this limited edition Bernie Wrightson print that Nakatomi released a few weeks ago?

Hey, as a Frankenstein devotee, I spend alot of ti Hey, as a Frankenstein devotee, I spend alot of time straightening out what Mary Shelley wrote versus what we see in adaptations. (I HAVE ALOT to say about Guillermo Del Toro's adaptation. That post is coming)

But I mostly love to talk about what's Behind the Book.

Today on Substack I revealed (kind of like a book nerd or literature student) one of Mary Shelley's influences.

Truth be told, I have studied The Rime of the Ancient Mariner and was never a wholehearted fan. My bestie will attest to my eye rolling at her mention of the albatross. BUT, Mr. Coleridge has a MASSIVE influence on the young Mary Shelley.

Check out how a Gothic poem's structure found its way to Frankenstein's frame narrative on Substack.

Come on over and say hello.
